Sometimes, something that actually goes on to achieve positive renown, or greatness, is really slow to catch on at first. A great example is the late-60s Kubrick movie, "2001: A Space Odyssey." Here, Kubrick had spent months, and untold hours, meticulously directing this thing, with the creativity and scrupulousness that were his hallmarks. And it bombed. Totally. People went, and here, this thing didn't really have a plot, just a weird classical-music soundtrack that seemed arbitrary, and these weird scenes of space and big rectangular stones and stuff. The theater managers said, "Send it back. It's a dud." But then they noticed something. It being the late 60s, the kids on acid started coming in and buying tickets. Sparsely at first, then bigger handfuls, and finally, kids on mushrooms and acid were packing the theater at each showtime. So the movie took off, and became a box-office hit.

(Thanks, I love to tell that that story :)

But "Won't Back Down," apparently, is NOT an example of smash-artistic-and-commercial-hit-in-dud's-clothing. No, it's really, truly, deservedly a dud, and all the PR and all the coercion of theater managers in the world aren't saving it.

It's here they got the range/ and the machinery for change/ and it's here they got the spiritual thirst. --Leonard Cohen
