That's never their calculation, they never worry about the next cycle.

If a seat is winnable now, they go for it now, the future be damned.

They have polled this district and found a big deficit, and looked into Taj and found he's way below par for what's needed to have a chance to win, even against this moron.  Those are the things they do:  they poll, they learn about the Dem candidate, and they learn about the GOP candidate.  Obviously the GOP candidate is very beatable, the DCCC has helped Democrats beat many far stronger Republicans in many stronger GOP districts than this one.  I understand the frustration with it that they won't play here, but it must be that Taj and the polling both are very problematic, given the disastrous nominee the GOP has.  The DCCC folks are cold-blooded horse race warriors, they're all about winning where a win can be had, and nothing else.

but I'm just skeptical of your insiderish, Party committees do no wrong type attitude. Kerry's campaign made plenty of mistakes despite being professionals. Professional pundits make mistaken judgments all the time despite being paid to be otherwise. And the DCCC has, more importantly, misjudged this district in both in 2006 and 2008 where it should and would have been a key pick up opportunity had they targeted it with good recruiting. That last point especially makes me skeptical that they are some all knowing organization that doesn't make mistakes. I don't think they go into nearly that much detail, and they are biased against candidates without any long-term viability or who are lower tier campaigners.
