I've never understood what makes a person a bully...or what makes alleged "Christians" condone such activity.
in the case of the bullies, fear that someone will bully them, if they don't bully someone else first. in the case of the AFA and all the fundie churches, fear that they are horribly, horribly wrong, and they will be punished in the afterlife. the more they condone the activity, the more right they think they are, and they might avoid eternal damnation. both are wrong of course. dante has a special circle in hell, reserved for both groups.

papercut indeed what drives them.  The mere existence of others who believe and act differently than they do triggers niggling doubts in the backs of their minds that say "What if we're wrong?"  They have no psychological mechanisms for dealing with doubt, so they double down on their faith.  It ends up becoming a vicious circle, which makes them all the more dangerous.

deep down that they are wrong. They must know that they are behaving in direct contradiction to the teachings of Jesus.

If they really had confidence and faith, they would not need this validation from other people.

Spiritually and morally, they have no bones, so they are desperate to construct an exoskeleton of validation and approval.
