Initially there was almost no air at all which is how he got near sound barrier speed. So there wasn't nearly enough air to rip arms off. The announcer commented that for at least 10-15 seconds there was so little air that it was crucial he jump in a way to minimize rotation, because he would have nothing to push on to slow it down.

Air density built up gradually. When he was around mach 1, some 30 seconds along, he began rotating pretty scarily. This means there was enough air to start turning him but not enough air density for his outstretched limbs to stabilize him as they would when falling at normal speeds out of a low flying plane. Speed was dropping rapidly below 600 mph.

After maybe 10 seconds (pure recollection) he stopped rotating and was seen in the classic spread-eagle skydive posture with his speed in the 200 or less range.

So I think it all comes down to speed vs how much air there is to slam into.

    Whatever happens, must be possible.
