I agree with the spirit of what you say with a couple nitpicks.

I would posit that once you are debunking, rebutting, refuting, etc you're fighting a losing battle.

The Dems have been on defense for ages and it's not the most effective way to win. They need to be the aggressors like you say in your last sentence. Especially on class warfare. We need to set the terms of the debate, frame the issues, and put the Republicans on defense. And you have to hammer away the same messages over and over and over until they start to sink in. Not with numbers and facts, but Frank Luntz style, with words and phrases that bypass your brain and go straight to your gut. After over half a century of brainwashing "tax and spend liberal" or "big government liberal" and "fiscal conservative" or "family values conservative" just feel redundant. These automatic associations are implanted and just there. No presentation of facts and numbers are going to persuade someone who knows in their gut that people like Paul Ryan are "deficit hawks."

I liked when Harry Reid first started saying that Mitt Romney paid no taxes, and if every other liberal, democrat, and Obama supporter would have just hammered away at it relentlessly it would have forced Romney to show the taxes just as Obama was forced to show his birth certificate. But we had too many democrats saying that Harry Reid was being irresponsible.
