the writers premise is off - It's not about "pride" it's about justice and also respect.

Justice in regards that common sense tells us that we should pay the guardians of a civilizations knowledge and the creators of new knowledge and the mentors of the coming generations some kind of pay that recognizes their work, achievements and role in society.

If we respected them, then we would treat them justly.

This Chancellor is simply showing open contempt for the very people who make his institution and his position possible

for the institution of peer-reviewed academia, publication, and research.

That part is completely missing from the equation in this diary.

      •  That's what I meant by creating new knowledge (0+ / 0-)

There is a concerted effort underfoot i my opinion to diminish and demean the teaching profession and academia in general form the lowest to the highest levels.

Charter school proponants want to break the unions and staff their schools with lowly paid Teach for America types who are not considering teaching as their lifes goal but merely a waystation and the universities are attempting to accomplish pretty much the same thing by turning their professors into the modern day equivalent of the circuit riding preacher without a church of his own.

Adjuncts have to cobble together a barely basic wage by teaching one class here, one class there, commuting often long distances and living inconveneient and impossible schedules.

I advocate for adjunsts just saying no and creating a work stoppage until they are offered decent wages, benefits and schedules. Our institutions of higher earning shouldn't be following the labor model of Walmart.
