    I lose weight just fine at 800 calories or even lower a day. 60 lbs in 3.5 months so far, without my metabolism giving me any trouble until I started flirting with 500 calories a day or fewer.  It's harder to actually get to 'starvation mode' than people think if you've actually got extra fat stores.  Now obviously if you're already thin, with a low bodyfat % you can probably get there a lot faster, and maybe for you, 1200 might be a minimum.  But for those of us in the 35+ BMI range thanks to lots of extra fat, the 1200 thing just isn't true.
