  •  Someone to take the other shift (17+ / 0-)

It's so much WORK.   The main reason for having a partner is to have someone to take the other shift.

Changing diapers  and feeding babies is a 24 hour job.   Even with a partner, you are looking at 12 hour shifts, seven days a week.  And, then you have 3 times as much trash with all those disposable diapers, which weigh a ton.

SERIOUSLY.   You have to sleep sometime.  And, someone has to go earn some money.    THAT's why it's good to have a partner to help care for the kids.   It's not that anything in particular is lacking in one parent.  It's just that there is more of all of it to go around.  More energy, more money, more patience, more time, and more chances to get a nap.    With one person, it's hard to get it all done.    It doesn't matter if it's a husband, wife, same sex partner, neighbor, friend, sister or grandparent.   It's just easier when you have some help.

It all comes down to a parent's chances for getting a good night's sleep.   With two people, you get a better shot at it at least half the time.   I am saying this after I stayed up until 2am while my daughter got stitches after tripping and ripping her arm open on a fence, while walking through the parking lot at Six Flags, last week.    I wimped out and took a half personal day so I could get at least a little sleep.   My husband got up and went to work at 5am after staying awake until midnight worrying.  So, at least someone put in a full day of money earning work that day.

Somehow, single parents do get it all done, usually at the expense of a few night's sleep, and often with a little help from aunts, uncles, grandparents, friends, neighbors, etc.   They are often the 47% who don't pay income tax, because half their paycheck goes to childcare while they are at work.

Single parents don't deserve to get blamed for all the world's problems after busting their tails to give their kids the best care that they can provide.
