I thought I would be disagreeing with your comment, but I agree with it 100%.  Society does have to be protected from dangerous people, and I am proud to say that I locked up some pretty dangerous people and, I would hope, saved lives.  But shortly before I moved on, the county privatized the county jail by turning it into a pork plant and it really sickened me, as I thought that we had abolished slave labor.

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. [My emp]
Or is it the privatization in conjunction with prisoner labor you were upset about?
      •  The previous pork plant had shut down (4+ / 0-)

It was the county's largest employer, employing 800 people, and then it reopened with prison labor.  The closing of the plant affected me because my URESA case load - Uniform Reciprocal Enforcement of Support Act - shot up, enforcement of child support orders where the custodial parent, usually the mom, moved to another state.  Unemployed people do have a habit of falling behind on their child support, and, of course, you can't draw blood from a turnip.  The reopening of the pork plant with prison labor did little for employment in the county and nothing to reduce the URESA filings.

      Just can't quit slavery.

The radical Republican party is the party of oppression, fear, loathing and above all more money and power for the people who robbed us.
