  •  Most welfare moms were MARRIED (14+ / 0-)

Yeppers, it is true, over 80% of welfare parents (including single dads) were married.  The reason they have to turn to welfare is because trhere is no work with a livable wage, the other parent cannot pay child support.  Furthermore, since they say parenting is "not work", any time spent in the home in care giving is not counted as experience and this work is negated as well in Social Security (all time care giving is not counted and SS is not collectible for care givers ~ which btw includes not just parenting, but care giving of elders and spouses where the choice to work for a wage is not possible).

I have posted in the Nation about this lack of respect for this work, but let me quote some people who met in a national last Monday. These were participants are based in:  Benton Harbor/MI;  Boston MA; Cleveland OH; Detroit MI; Los Angeles CA; Milwaukee WI; New York State; Oakland CA; Olympia WA; Omaha NE; Philadelphia PA; Richmond VA, Salt Lake City UT, San Francisco CA.  We would LOVE to ask some things about poverty in these debates (yeah right who gives a damn about poor people except to use them as political footballs???).  These people could have said it better:

It is time for politicians, right, left and center, to stop talking out of both sides of their mouths, paying lip service to the work of mothers while calling poor moms moochers and scroungers, and cutting lifeline resources for moms with the least.  Women are being forced to stay in abusive relationships or to take low waged work regardless of the impact on their children.  From social security, where years raising children are considered our “zero years”, to welfare reform, to lack of pay equity in waged work, mothers are penalized.  We say every mother is a working mother and every child is entitled to care!

The International Labour Organization states that women do 2/3 of the world’s work for 5% of the income.  There are 16.4 million children living in poverty in the rich USA; 7.4 million in extreme poverty. It’s time to start paying attention to who is holding up half the sky.

I read that somewhere.  A lot of these women are not only married, but they're forced to basically throw their husbands out because their mere presence would somehow cause them to receive less welfare money.

When you apply for benefits, you list everyone in the household. The adults are expected to work. So, if I apply for benefits for myself and my children, and they find out a man (or another adult) is living within my household, I will lose my benefits for lying about who lives in the home. , Even if I'm up front and list the person, their income will be factored into the benefits equation, thus reducing my benefits. Reading this back, I'm not sure I've explained coherently.
