as a non-attorney this all seems so open-ended to me.

but there are federal time lines for filing appeals and the Courts have their own time lines (not open ended) to review cases on appeal and decide whether or not to take them.  This particular case -- which I think is the one which provoked the Obama Administration to cease defense of DOMA -- will be heard and most likely this term.

I don't think SCOTUS can bundle the cases because the issues are two distinctly different.

I'm straight -- and I don't have real skin in this "game."  But, I want to see a solid outcome for my LGBT brothers and sisters because their equal rights affect my equal rights.

And you aren't whining.  Ask questions -- always ask questions.

but would find it INCREDIBLY frustrating, if I did, that Congress is nowhere near half female. I can still recognize that as a whopping milestone.

What I have read about Kennedy is that he's very concerned about how he looks to his foreign colleagues, and they'd take a dim view of his siding with Scalia and The Gang to toss out all the underlying cases purely on ideological grounds.
