On following up and asking her why she would vote for someone who's bringing in a lot of people who worked for Bush?

    •  My husband and I have worked on her... (5+ / 0-)

...but it is really awkward. She doesn't love Romney but she REALLY doesn't like Obama, mainly because of the 16 trillion deficit.  I'm too emotional and I don't want to create a riff in our relationship so I didn't push the issue.

Recently, my dad arranged for my husband to meet and have his picture taken with Obama.  When I texted her a copy of the picture, she was really excited for him.  I texted her that now she had to vote for Obama, otherwise the photograph would be less impressive.  She texted something like, "Ha ha, you're right!"

P.S. It is hard to recount a conversation conducted via text.

My family is mostly Democratic and African American, so I doubt any will vote for Romney, though I have a couple hyper-religious anti-gay marriage relatives who have me worried. (I refrained from sending a forceful e-mail to one of them for fear of damaging the relationship.)

But if you get a chance, ask her if she understands how much of that debt came from the wars that these same advisers pushed and the tax cuts that Bush passed. And does she understand that Romney wants to continue and expand the cuts and his advisers would happily start more wars? Romney creates debt that hurts people, Obama's debt goes to help people. Which does she prefer?

And congratulations on becoming a lawyer (my brother is one - I should have guessed from the way he loved to argue as a kid. ;-)  )
