  •  That reminds me of when I was in college and I (8+ / 0-)

    royally angered a student from South Africa. She said that she had always thought the U.S. was a rich country and was surprised to come here and see how poor we all were. Her evidence for this was that in South Africa eveyone had maids and no one she'd met in the United States had a made. I looked at her and said, "Everyone?"

    She said, "Yes, everyone."

    "So," I said, "do the maids have maids?"

    She just got up and walked away.

    But that really says something about the mindset. They see countries with large class divisions as being wealthier than more egalitarian countries because, while there's more poverty, there's also more signs of luxury, which in their reptilian brains signals "wealth."
