...is the way DK4's default setting is to not show hidden comments.  That's what causes the problem with hidden tip jars and friendly fire.

I'd prefer if folks would save their tip jar hide-ratings for diaries that are so bad -- bad as in legally problematic for the site -- that the hidden tip jar could serve as a heads-up for the admins that they might need to delete the diary.

is HRing the tip jar is oftentimes the only way to get a troll to autoban, especially if they don't comment otherwise.  in fact, this was a huge part of the rationale behind creating the automatic tip jars -- so that trolls could be HR'd and dealt with.

there is nothing wrong with HRing the tip jar of a trollish diary, whether written by an actual troll or a kossack just having a bad day.

      •  Does that ever work? (0+ / 0-)

I thought autoban required many comments being hide-rated.  Unless a troll is posting a ton of diaries each day, can hide-rating tip jars alone get them to the autoban threshold?

        •  ostensibly, the hidden comments (0+ / 0-)

are periodically reviewed, so mgmt can drop the banhammer if need be.
