    The voter registration database is online and easily accessible and, unfortunately, party affiliation can matter here.

    If you're a Dem in a heavily GOP part of the state - or vice versa - you could have a hard time finding a job in public service. I have friends in law enforcement and municipal government and virtually all are registered as Unaffiliated.

      I was civil service for New York State, working with local governments.  Had to register as independent so my local government people wouldn't assume bias on my part--they really do check your party.

      Before that I worked for Republican local governments and was advised before I applied for the jobs to switch my party affiliation to independent.
