  •  More likely it's contrarianism for libertarians (16+ / 0-)

There is a strain of libertarians who pride themselves on being contrarians, on not following the herd, on being skeptical, on being smarter than everyone else, actually.  It is a fundamental part of their identity.  So if scientists and liberals are getting concerned about climate change, they pooh-pooh it.  If the former are getting increasingly alarmed, they call them chicken littles, double down on denialism.  Until it finally becomes untenable.  So we see a couple of these guys have come over.

Other educated conservatives are science deniers because it is too inconvenient.  If climate change is really happening, then probably big new government initiatives and collective action will be needed to deal with it.  So it can't be happening, because big government initiatives and collective action are communist by definition.  Of course some amount are publicly deniers because confusion serves their economic interests, but privately they know perfectly well it is happening and plan to take advantage of it where they can.  The Koch Bros are in this category.

The scientific uncertainty doesn't mean that climate change isn't actually happening.
