Why is he not universally condemned? I wouldn't be at all surprised if he's not extolled as a hero by the right wing.
Because they're better at this than we are.
Even though there is this supposed liberal media bias, its for the most part, reasonable.
They know how to do outrage. They own it. Fox & friends, Drudge Report know exactly how to take losing and turn it into a win. They just don't admit it. (see Ryan/Biden VP Debate)
We on the other hand lose our freaking minds, publicly expressing our disappointment in our president. Staying home and pouting in 2010 and allowing the tea party to ramrod through the house.
If the tables were turned the other day, and the black guy candidate had been condescendingly dismissive to the white guy president, they right would have blown a gasket. Would still be! We quietly take our huge lumps and move on, not wanting to seem out of control.
Its our own fault. We could make a long sad list of things, that if tables were turned, the outrage would be maddening. This is how the right controls the conversation, puts us on the defense of situations where we're the victims for crying out loud.
This drives me completely mad. Making a list, starting with lying us into a war, would make me madder. So I won't. But you guys can, just to see it all laid bare before us.

I do wish we could get a hold of these narratives in a way that fits our collective personalities, was strong, clear and most of all persistent until mainstream media could no longer ignore it.

My mama used to say, "don't worry. It'll all come out in the wash."
