    and my uncle had some property up there.

    It's really depressed now, and it must have been at least as depressed in Lovecraft's day. The only place in New England where I've seen "Tancredo for President" signs.

    But it has a very big Wal-Mart.

      Lovecraft wrote in one of his letters that Dunwich is "...a vague echo of the decadent Massachusets countryside around Springfield -- say Wilbramhan, Monson, and Hampden".  He visited the area of south central Massachusets in the summer of 1928.  He also borrowed geographical and historical details from other parts of the state.
