    '...no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to a public office or trust under the United States.' Article 6 clause 3 US Constitition -

    Why doesn't CNN bring this up or question why this sort of illegal litmus test is being considers in the election? Why do they bring up the subject at all? Or if it's legitmate news (only because of all the coverage of religious issues in politics) why aren't they questioning why the subject is being advanced publicly or privately?

      It is illegal for a religious test to exist for public office.

      It is not illegal to vote for or against someone based solely on their religion (nor should it be, nor would there be any reasonable method to enforce it if it was).

      I would agree that doing so or encouraging someone to do so is against the traditions of pluralism, but I can think of religions that simple membership in them would immediately make me vote against that person without knowing anything else about them (e.g. a Scientologist President cannot be allowed under any cirucumstances regardless of how reasonable they seem).
