  •  Romney's heart bleeds for Pentagon (5+ / 0-)

Let's say, for argument's sake that some people become dependent if Uncle Sam is too generous w/ domestic spending.   Why does that principle suddenly evaporate into the ether w/ "defense" spending?

Why is it morally acceptable to spend billions for almost 3 decades now on Reagan's fantasy of a missile defense system, but it's immoral to spend on food stamps?  How is maintaining a nuclear stockpile that vastly exceeds any conceivable security need morally superior to funding Pell Grants?   We can't afford to give a relative piattance to PBS, but we can afford to continue to spend billions keeping Karzai afloat?

The issue is not what Sam spends.  The issue is how he spends it.  I can respect an honest libertarian who wants to whack weapons systems just as hard as he/she whacks food stamps.  Such people, however, are never found in the halls of Congress (much less the WH), and damned few of them are found elsewhere.

Romney is just as big of a "bleeding heart" as McGovern ever was.   Unlike McGovern, however, Romney's heart doesn't bleed for actual people.  It bleeds for military contractors.

Some men see things as they are and ask why. I dream of things that never were and ask why not?
