    Colorado is the Shiznit

    I avoided Wall Street, but being in software development, friends and colleagues were coming from or going there constantly.

    It is an asshole culture, in many, many ways, so near as I can tell.  It changed people's personalities.  On the other hand, everyone going into it knew it would be mercenary and narsty and rolled accordingly.  Because I considered that sector as a real job option for a time, I am not so sanguine as to say "those people are assholes".  Actually they are just like thee and me but they've adapted to a specific subculture -- and the reasons for that adaptation range from the venal to sublime.  One colleague who ended up working on trading systems and making some of those noises had come halfway around the world to escape persecution.  Others worked there because they'd always had money to roll in and wanted it sticking to their junk.  But mostly, they wanted a gig and that was the best gig in town for money and you are inevitably shaped by that -- not  all such folks are weasels like your exemplar, but such weasels have few if any checks up on their voice and inclinations.

    I loved the part of your rant about poor and middle class.  The only thing I'd change is this: unless you are Mitt or Mitt-level, you have looked at the Île des Pauvres through your binoculars, from wherever you sit in America, and you fear it.  Even the choice to find something meaningless and middle class to talk about is a kind of distinguishing mark to show you are not concerned with the things people must worry about in that awful place.  Mileage varies :}

    ...j'ai découvert que tout le malheur des hommes vient d'une seule chose, qui est de ne savoir pas demeurer en repos dans une chambre.
