If you ever come out for a visit, plan on getting off the Interstates if you want to see what Idaho is REALLY  like.

We have a hugely deep canyon and massive lava flows in the south, (and the highest mountains) in the south, a solid mountain belt in the middle, and narrow glacial valleys in the north. The countryside here is immensely varied.

The interstates were all built in the few areas that allowed 4 lanes and a divider and had room enough to allow wide high-speed turns. Those areas, unfortunately, are also the least appealing in the state. But if one travels 40 miles or less in any direction off an interstate, natural vistas like these pictures are everywhere.

Right many are called, and damn few are chosen.

Some of the most boring views in Idaho (and many other states as well) are along the interstate highways.  On top of that, you're having to pay attention to the fast-moving traffic around you, while billboards, truck stops, and power lines obstruct the view.

Give me the back roads any old day, as long as the snow isn't too deep.
