  •  they didn't edit anything (0+ / 0-)

they presented it in a strange way, acknowledged that they presented it in a strange way and explained why.

    fast forwarding is not editing.

    •  Look again.... (7+ / 0-)

      FROM MEDIA MATTERS ANALYSIS

Here is Obama's September 12 speech as aired by Fox:

Yesterday, four of these extraordinary Americans were killed in an attack on our diplomatic post in Benghazi .... We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others .... Of course, yesterday was already a painful day for our nation as we marked the solemn memory of the 9/11 attacks .... No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation.

Wallace claimed that Fox excised portions of the speech "to show that there was quite a gap between various things that he was discussing."

But what Fox edited out of the tape is critical to understanding that Obama was very clearly discussing the Consulate attack when he said that "no acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation." In fact, the very next sentence in Obama's speech discussed the victims of the Consulate attack, which he called "this terrible act."

This is what Obama actually said, with the portion aired by Wallace in bold:

Of course, yesterday was already a painful day for our nation as we marked the solemn memory of the 9/11 attacks.  We mourned with the families who were lost on that day.  I visited the graves of troops who made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan at the hallowed grounds of Arlington Cemetery, and had the opportunity to say thank you and visit some of our wounded warriors at Walter Reed.  And then last night, we learned the news of this attack in Benghazi.

As Americans, let us never, ever forget that our freedom is only sustained because there are people who are willing to fight for it, to stand up for it, and in some cases, lay down their lives for it.  Our country is only as strong as the character of our people and the service of those both civilian and military who represent us around the globe.

No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for.  Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America.  We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act.  And make no mistake, justice will be done.

It is only possible to pretend that there is any ambiguity over whether Obama was calling the Benghazi attack an act of terror if you edit the tape

i watched the video on their page, too.

and no matter what media matters or anyone else says, fast forwarding does not constitute an edit.  fox news even acknowledged they presented it strangely, because they wanted to emphasize their interpretation of it.

selective quoting is NOT editing.  smarmy and intellectually dishonest?  yes, but not editing.

and that's all i'm saying here.  media matters' point would have been much better served with something along the lines of

It is only possible to pretend that there is any ambiguity over whether Obama was calling the Benghazi attack an act of terror if you cherry pick quotes.
        that's status quo for fox.

        •  I guess that depends on what one considers (6+ / 0-)

editing.  I say that because we have a studio and have done much recording.  If I have a mix down of work and I go back in and fool around with the mix...I have edited it.  My husband woud say I have ruined it.

and when it comes to video footage, "editing" has a rather precise meaning.  all they did was fast forward through context to ask their panel if they thought their emphasis supported their interpretation.

fox news cherry picked quotes and ignored context.  in other news, water is wet.  but they did not "edit" the video footage.

footage, which provided necessary context that directly contradicted Fox's narrative.  Fox left that footage on the cutting room floor.

Even if you don't think that speeding up substantial portions of a speech such that they are incomprehensible is editing (and I disagree with you on that point), surely you would agree that truncating the video short of the actual conclusion of the President's remarks on the subject, in a way that left out critical context, is both (a) editing and (b) deceptive.

              •  no...they left no footage (0+ / 0-)

on the cutting room floor or anywhere else.

they just fast forwarded through it.  that is not cutting.

                no.  words !@#$%& mean things.

yes, they selectively quoted and ignored context, but they did not edit the video footage.  they basically said "look at these words here.  that's where we base our interpretation.  do you agree?"

and of course their panel of birthers is going to agree.  was it deceptive? everything fox does is deceptive; this was tame by their standards.  is it smarmy?  yes.  a ridiculous point to even be arguing over?  absolutely.

but. they. did. not. edit. the. video.

They sped up select portions of the video to the point that it was completely useless to someone who was trying to make sense of the clip.  They made some information available and some unavailable.  And they did so by speeding up parts of the video to the point that it was  incomprehensible to anyone in the audience.

I think, the fact that they showed the audience that they were removing the information, makes no difference.  To me, an edit is an edit, whether you are aware of it or not.

If you cut off a piece of text short of the conclusion in the author's original, you have, by definition, edited that text.

And if you do so in a way that (attempts to) drag the selected text out of context and confuse its meaning, you are guilty of a logical fallacy.  That the contextomy occurs at the end of the transcript does not change this fact.

In their supposed "fast forward" edit

      He mentions Libya first,
      9/11 second,
      and then much later
      "acts of terror"
followed by conversation about whether Obama was linking acts of terror to Libya

They are trying to make people think that his "acts of terror" line was linked to his comments about 9/11, and late enough in his speech that you, the viewer, should realize his reference to "acts of terror" was not linked to his comments about Libya.

The actual sequence of events was

      mentions 9/11
      mentions Libya
      and then much later
      says "acts of terror"
but mentions 4 killed in Libya in very next sentence

      •  as obama said, check the transcript (0+ / 0-)

he does, indeed, mention libya first.

...Yesterday, four of these extraordinary Americans were killed in an attack on our diplomatic post in Benghazi.

...The United States condemns in the strongest terms this outrageous and shocking attack.  We're working with the government of Libya to secure our diplomats.  I've also directed my administration to increase our security at diplomatic posts around the world.  And make no mistake, we will work with the Libyan government to bring to justice the killers who attacked our people.

...Already, many Libyans have joined us in doing so, and this attack will not break the bonds between the United States and Libya.  Libyan security personnel fought back against the attackers alongside Americans.  Libyans helped some of our diplomats find safety, and they carried Ambassador Stevens’s body to the hospital, where we tragically learned that he had died.

        ...

No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for.
