it's not a Barn owl (they screech).  More likely a Great horned owl.

This one hoots and lives and "works" in a barn, and I've never heard him screech.  Odd, that.

      •  If it lives in a barn, it's about got to be a barn (2+ / 0-)

owl -- Tyto Alba, what say you on this?

Long-eared owls (both sexes) hoot, and male short-eared owls have a hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo call. Fwiw, both species began showing up in my 'hood after the barn owls were driven away. Until then, the only other owls I'd heard nearby were great-horned, barred, and screech owls.

we have some Short Eared Owls down here in Santa Barbara at an endangered  open space More Mesa that I have seen hunting and on the ground. Now I see they are ground nesting, there are Foxes O'Plenty and once I saw 21 skunks in an hour...some mating ritual or skunky religion...hard to tell them apart sometimes.

And now I just noticed they don't show the actually rare Short Earred Owl on their web page, which I shall excoriate them for, as it is a rareish finding according to my pro biologist friend, and they are working every angle to save this place.

          Thanks!

        •  WOW! What a terrific website! (0+ / 0-)

Thank you for the links to the calls.  My owl is definitely not a barn owl, even though it lives in the horse barn.  If that shrill screeching went on in the barn next door there would be a horse stampede out of there.  From the calls on the website, it has to be a male long-eared owl.  It's a beautiful sound.

      •  Barred Owl (4+ / 0-)

My favorite owl so far, amazing range of vocalizations, and while they're very territorial and will follow you, croaking and screeching like herons or monkeys, as far as I know they won't attack (as great horned owls are wont to). One winter there were 5 in my neck of the woods and they would do a nightly call-and-response with one another up and down my valley.

They do make some amazing rackets! The Who Cooks for you call is pretty though:

        •  Thanks...I just saw this. (0+ / 0-)

We had an ancient spruce, about 80 ft tall, where owls hung out for years. The top 2/3rds was twisted off by a tornado.  A few years later the remaining was ruined by "tree trimmers" who cut off all the limbs when we weren't around to stop them.

Now I know Barred owls were among them.
