    used to be inquisitorial... but the current version is sort of a bit of both. with the worst of each sometimes... heh...

    One strong area is that they have automatic guaranteed appeals... We in the US have a huge number of innocent people locked up who can sometimes wait decades or forever for an appeal that should have come way sooner...

    So we try or think we try to get it right the first time around and have actual juries. But then we are really bad at admitting or even imagining that a conviction might have been wrong...

    The Italians seem to have a "just in case" convict them approach and then have the automatic appeal as a safety net to reverse mistakes... not great for innocent people but they don't have to wait as long...
