What Governor Romney meant to say is that Iran's route to the Mediterranean Sea passes through Syria and Lebanon.  This is indeed an important consideration for Iran.  Unfortunately for Iran, Iraq's Sunni minority block this route towards the sea, though this seems fairly minor.
What is the most striking about the noting of this fact, however, is that the notion of an outlet to the Med for Iran is something only enabled by George W. Bush's invasion of Iraq and subsequent empowerment of a Sunni government, somewhat tributary to the theocratic state.
Iran's opening to the Mediterranean, due to G.W.B., is in danger of disappearing before ever being useful under Obama and the dissolution of the Syrian government's control over its territory.
