    should we let these nuts through now . . . and save the final battle for the 1st supreme when the public will be paying more attention?

    That is how some people are trying to frame a potential 'compromise'.   But as Lieberman himself made very clear yesterday the key part of any such compromise is that the Republican parties to that separate peace deal would have to promise not to help implement the nuclear option anytime during this congress and as to new nomination (like to the Supreme Court) the Democrat parties would only agree to use their own judgment on whether a filibuster was appropriate.

    That is the only sort of deal that could work but it right now looks like it will not happen because the Republicans will not give up the option to break the rules because the party line is that the rule is unconstitutional.
