  •  Well, I liked it (13+ / 0-)

It feels like more of a 'ghost story' to me than classic horror, but there were plenty of creepy horror elements in it -- the thing that kept it from being totally dark horror was Depp's over-the-top portrayal of Ichabod Crane as the somewhat nerdy and unprepared investigator who finds himself in way, way over his head.

Casting was very good -- especially Walken!  He does creepy monster from the dark so very well.

I think it's the first time I've ever seen the story provide a background and history for the Headless Horseman -- why he's headless and why he rides, and why he is going after the particular victims he does.   As I recall, in the original short story, he's just a ghost story that doesn't really exist -- his purpose is just a vehicle for the local boys to scare off Ichabod Crane.  But in this version of the story, the Horseman is terrifyingly real, and that was to me what made the movie successful -- after all that build-up, I'd have been disappointed to find out otherwise.

I shall have to dig that DVD up again, would be fun to see it around Halloween.
