  •  I know why. (19+ / 0-)

Because the average American knows squat when it comes to geography.

The American public is not known for their mastery of geography and therefore, Romney's boneheaded statement will fly right into their loving arms and empty craniums.

Even when confronted with the facts they defend their ignorance with glee and attack the president.

As I said, I'm not sure it's even because they know Americans are weak on their geography knowledge. I feel like there is more to it than that, because he could have developed any number of talking points which would not have relied on such an easily refuted error.

      •  It has to do with Russia, actually. (2+ / 0-)

And China.  Syria was doing a lot of business with both countries prior to this current civil war.  I was actually surprised that neither of those countries made any obvious moves to stop the uprising.  The bottom line is that access to oil is at the root of all of this stuff and all of the "super powers" are involved in a competition for control of these countries' oil reserves.  It is nothing particularly new, but always a shadow factor - except when we do things like invade Iraq - in what looks like independent nations dealings.

      And CARES not at all.

They will say to themselves, "Well, hell, I don't know where the foog Syria is, either! That don't make no never mind. Mitt's a good man JUST LIKE ME!!"

And besides, "He'll have people for that."

      Just like Bush did.

have a myopic view. The USA and no other countries really matter to them.

The ignorance extends beyond locating other countries. A sizable portion would fail to find their own "greatest country" in the world

Furthermore, the attitude of... Why do I need to know where other countries are located? What their history and culture are matters not, because their reasoning is... I am not going there nor do I live there.
"Bomb 'em, if they don't like us" is a problem solver which is usually in direct proportion to their lack of geographic knowledge.

Palin, Joe the plumber, et al are looked up to. Nope, Romney is in good company with his supporters. They just don't care.
