    I mean, yes, if you ignore all geopolitics involved and just say "as the crow flies, what would Iran's best route to sell stuff to the west be? Clearly, right there!" -- then it works, I guess.

    That's not terribly compelling as a defense, I'm afraid. This is not a viable trade route for Iran.

        I'm sure they want a pony and a little red wagon, too.

        I mean, I'm sure it'd make them happy to have a clear and easy trade route to the Mediterranean, but they don't spectacularly need one that goes over all those other countries, both because oil is purchased all over the place and because there's the Suez Canal just a hop down past the Arabian peninsula.
