    See this white paper on US Naval Operations dated 2008 commissioned by the Navy War College. Wherein the author reviews the tactical and history of major naval operations  in the 20th Century noting that “experience shows that it is not necessary to have numerical superiority for the success of major naval operations.  He states that clashes of major parts of opposing fleets in a so-called decisive battle or “general fleet action,” became obsolete in the aftermath of the battle of Jutland during World War I in June 1916.  

    Hmmmm.  And no mention o fbayonets either.
