  •  This is seriously confusing for our 12 year old (7+ / 0-)

son, who has been following the election and the debates and who watches Rachel Maddow, Colbert and Stewart with us regularly.  And he doesn't understand how it is that when a candidate for president is exposed as a liar, everyone keeps on dealing with him as though he were doing nothing wrong.

He knows that in his own life, he can't go around telling lies and expect there to be no consequences.  But he doesn't understand how it is that people in politics, like Romney or Ryan, are being permitted to get away with that.

And what, indeed, are we setting as a national example for our children through this kind of media manipulation?  There's an awful lot of talk about "values" and "family friendly programming" in the media, but it comes down to taking the easy bullet-point way out and fetishizing fetuses, religion and heterosexual marriage.  The more complicated and difficult aspects of "values"-- the ones that are in the very Ten Commandments that Christianists point to as the bedrock of civilization-- seem to be easily swept aside by the media when they keep pushing the liars and deceivers Romney and Ryan as perfectly fine candidates.

That's one more thing to add to my long list of small problems. --my son, age 10
