  •  This seems a little simplistic to me. I don't want (0+ / 0-)

the Democrats circling the wagon for the likes of Vitter and Craig.

Shirley Sherrod was not abandoned.  She was treated badly when people jumped to conclusions on the basis of a very damned well done slanderously edited video.  But then her innocence was recognized, she was apologized to, and offered her job back or another position.  Democrats made mistakes but faced and corrected them.  That's what I want to see.

Van Jones says he resigned so as not to be a distraction. It's still true in this contry that someone who publicly wrote about being a communist is still a point of easy attack, especially given how Obama is already attacked for "radical" associations.  Even if the guy in question later wrote that he wasn't a communist any more.  I respect and admire Van Jones, but I think in most administrations he would not have passed the initial vetting.  Which reflects badly on the American public, but you have to choose your battles.  It's messy...  but I think Van was probably right to resign and Obama was right to accept it.  Van Jones will go on to contribute in other ways.

I don't think Democrats are cowards compared to Republicans.  Republicans march in lock step better -- so they circle the wagons if they're told to.  But I don't find their moral courage exceeding the Dems.  Far from it.
