  •  I think if McCain (0+ / 0-)

Starts supporting immigration reform its less about 2016 prospects and a run again Gabby Giffords because I think you're getting about 3 steps ahead of yourself. McCain will be 80 in 2016 which is old even by senate standards. Plus we're talking about whether Gabby Giffords is healthy and even if she is whether she'd have an interest in running.

If he does it, its more about his historical legacy than re-election prospects. McCain seems like the kind of guy who really cares what comes up when his grandchildren are going to google his name 20 years from now(even if he doesn't necessarily know what google is.) Being the guy who is instrumental in passing an immigration reform bill is a very strong capstone to his career.

    •  Two things (0+ / 0-)

      1) The Gabby comment was really a throwaway comment. Not my point. I understand why everyone wants to discuss this but my point was about sussing out what a Carmona win would mean for immigration reform.
      2) Yes, assuming McCain runs again is getting ahead of myself but then again as you just said, my point stays the same if he does not run.

      •  I get what you're saying (0+ / 0-)

But, this is an elections board and if you suggest the possibility of a Gabby Giffords-John McCain race that's going to be a hot topic.

To answer your questions more directly, I don't think Carmona's victory has any impact on what McCain does on the issue of immigration. It'll be about how much he cares about his historical legacy.

        •  Fair enough (0+ / 0-)

And I know this is an election board. Why is which I was interested in the impact of a Carmona victory on Republican thinking on immigration.
I love elections like you do but I am also interested in their indirect impact on policy beyond simply "who won".
Surely there has to be some second-thinking among Republicans about how they are starting to lose surefire Western states because of their nonsense on immigration.
          You know what I mean?

And yeah a Giffords McCain race would be something to behold. More generally, I cannot WAIT for 2016. I suspect the Presidential race will be rough because the GOP field is impressive but the Senate landscape ... so many people I wanna have revenge on.
