    the benefit of the doubt, and believe that he didn't mean rape was a gift from God.  Fine.

    But his statement is offensive in so many other ways.  If the pregnancy is a "gift from God", so you have to keep the baby, he's totally discounting the trauma of the attack.  And for many rape survivors, undergoing a nine month pregnancy and giving birth would just perpetuate the trauma.  Not to mention that, regardless of whether the baby is given up for adoption or not, there is now a real person out there that is the product of an evil, violent act.  I don't see that as a gift from God.  That is punishment for a woman's sin of getting herself raped - this is the true, underlying sentiment at work here and in all the recent GOP rape statements.

    And on another level, I am sick and tired of politicians preaching publicly about their faith and then whining when they get attacked for it.  I really don't care what Mourdock believes, but I'll be damned if I'm going to let him legislate my beliefs.  We have really got to stop all of this religious talk in politics.  Thomas Jefferson must be rolling in his grave...
