There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
And one from Bill Maher about those teenage wunderkind the GOP fawns over because they can sound just like Rush, or Hannity, or Glenn Beck, because I think it also accurately describes the Randian cult:
And finally, New Rule: If a 14-year-old can deliver your message, it's not because he's gifted, it's because, intellectually, you're a child.

You'll notice that the left doesn't have any teen prodigies. You're not going to find a 14-year-old who can do Rachel [Maddow]'s show. But, to do Hannity or Rush, it's a very simple procedure.

Step One: Be a giant dick. Step Two: There is no Step Two.

"There's something fundamentally wrong with a a system where a handful of people have more than they'd ever need and the mass of the people have less than they always need." -- Rev. Joseph Lowery
