    own power and control politically and economically. The regional differences in many areas - economic, educational, religious, e.g. - led them to want to unite, but to also maintain a degree of independence. The senate and the EC are what grants them that.

    I wonder how much enthusiasm would change in total if EC were eliminated. One can see how not being taken for granted, or having a vote actually count (eg, dems in Texas) could boost interest, but OTOH, some would see themselves as even further diluted by the mass of votes to be cast across the country, and not just in their own state, lending a greater feeling of remove to the process.
