  •  The panels will recharge on ambient light (6+ / 0-)

It takes a lot longer, but it will charge from indoor light or weak light. The lantern I got - which can be charged by the solar panel - also can be charged by car lighter or wall outlet, and will hold the charge up to six months. (I've got it charging up now.) And it serves as battery for anything I can run off a USB, so I know I'll be able to recharge my phone.

I picked up a solar cell-phone-charger, but that's all it's good for really. So in retrospect it kind of sucks. Sounds like your gizmo does more. :)

The flashlight (which has its own little solar panel attached) was $27.

There was a small generator - you couldn't run something big like a fridge or a freezer or a stove on it, but perfect for small appliances (coffee maker!) and able to power an entire power strip for multiple devices, for about $100. The generator has a removable battery pack with rechargeable AA batteries that you can take out and use in other battery-powered devices, too. One nice thing about it, it's easy to lift with one hand; it's probably about 15-18 inches high and not much more than a 10 inch diameter. I wanted to buy that, but I really don't have the $$.

They're all from a company called Goal Zero (, out of Utah. (Though I'm pretty sure the solar panels are from China, of course.) And the solar panel is very durable - the sales rep closed it up (it's about the size of a sheet of paper, though heavier) and banged it hard on the edge of the table and the generator itself, and did no damage to it whatsoever! All of them, even the solar panel itself, have USB ports, and he made a point of saying they can be daisychained off the generator, for instance, so you can charge all of them at once.
