    and Marbles of course, were the school yard toys I remember from the 50's.
    Tops was my favorite. For those that never saw or heard of them: Tops were made from wood, had a steel point, and a string was wound around it, with a loop on one end around your a finger. If I remember correctly, the object of the game was to knock other tops out of a circle that was drawn on the ground and still keep your top spinning. Of course, if you were able to split others Tops, that was a bonus.
    I even spent most of one summer building a top out of a piece of seasoned oak with my jack knife, never did get the balance right though.
    Thanks for the memories, especially the memory of sore "shooters thumb", or maybe I just never got my shooting technique .perfected
