He made it sound like this will be more of a nuisance for NYers than anything else.  He doesn't want to close schools because of the money that will be lost. Plus his ego.Even if transportation is shutdown that doesn't necessarily mean schools will be closed even though many students commute from the outer boroughs into Manhattan and many teachers commute from Long Island but I expect him to care even less about them than student safety.

The local school district didn't want to close down for a snow storm. We had a new superintendent who thought that we all overreact when a little snow shows up.   Other districts in the area did have more sense and close.  So what made the evening news was pictures of kids from our district trying to get on the bus but slipping and falling on the ice.  Not quite what the sup was hoping for--he wanted a macho story about how strong districts didn't need snow days.

      It only happened once.

during an ice storm.  My elder was fine since his school was in Manhattan but my younger one did not fare as well in Brooklyn as he took several spills.

If the MTA shuts down he is going to have to either close the schools or not penalize students who can not get there. During the transit strike there were delayed openings so that helped.

Schools may be the safest place for them.  Most inner cities try to keep schools open if possible.

own for middle school.  A lot of districts don't have zoned middle and high schools.  If public transportation is not running then students who live n Queens or Staten Island and attend, for example, Bronx Science, should not be penalized if they can't make it to school.

In the Loma Prieta earthquake we had parents separated from their kids because they couldn't get across the bay (all bridges were out for awhile, at least according to the AM station that we could get from our office.)

Some conservative nutcase on the radio was saying that it served working moms right for not being home with their children or something like that.

With this storm I think I'd take the kids and pets as far inland as possible.   Right now.   The problem is that like Katrina, many poor New Yorkers do not have transportation options.
