    They're politically savvy and will keep their eyes on the election while seeing that resources are available to those in need and, if need be,  he has plenty of surrogates and could recruit more.  

    And if the right starts their usual bullshit, they may face a backlash. People don't like political opportunists during emergencies. Romney's ill-timed response to the consulate attack shows the dangers of trying to cash in.

      I was quite involved in a Minneapolis mayoral campaign at the time. About 10 or 11 a.m. I got on the Minneapolis issues list and suggested that all campaign activity be suspended. Within an hour all campaigns agreed to the suspension. The suspension of campaigning allowed us all to devote our time to our civic duties without distraction. The election went just fine, turnout was higher than expected, and the outcome was the same as everyone expected.
