subtropolis, Gutterboy, mkfarkus the sense that the wind speeds in the center dropped a bit (they are expected to reintensify).  But that didn't stop the wind shield from growing.  It is the size of the thing, not the intensity at the center, that counts.  It will be a minimal hurricane at landfall but it will have the storm surge of a much more powerful storm because it is so large.  This also means 24 hours of tropical force winds and rain over a large area inland.

Oh, yes. the current tracks put it into southern NJ but this means that the coast northward to LI gets the worst of the storm surge.  Remember that here on the east coast a lot of coastal rivers have tidewaters that go well inland (this on top of the freshwater flooding) and those will flood, too.  The coastal situation appears to be worse than Irene and Floyd.
