    For us, a generator is insurance: it will help avoid additional damage - on top of what storms have traditionally inflicted to house, fencing, etc. - from burst pipes during winter months and also keep perishable food around long enough to be eaten before going bad in any time of the year.

    My uncle in the next town had thousands of dollars in damage from frozen pipes last October - it's something we try to avoid.  Specifically, my generator power rating was chosen for only basics in the house . . . not for burning down a refinery to keep our porch lights on.
