    but we'd have pretty much the same problem we have today.  No one is interested in officially investigating this stuff, what makes anyone think that if there were discrepancies with paper backup ballots that we would be able to get the officials to investigate them and actually count the backup ballots?

    It's a good idea and certainly better than the status quo but it would need to be coupled with some kind of legislation to trigger an automatic recount in the event of certain conditions and random spot checks.  Otherwise we'd still be in the same boat.

      Actually there are. In most states, elections within a certain percentage are automatically recounted and in many states, either side can demand a recount (sometimes the campaign has to pay the state for the operating cost of the recount).
      There are also Auditing groups in many states. They are independent groups, staffed by volunteers (in some states, they even pay!), that go back after an election and verify that the count was correct.
      This is a great way to participate in democracy, BTW. Find an auditor group in your state and sign up. You'll learn more about the mechanics of democracy than you can imagine. And at the same time, you'll be performing a service to your fellow citizens
