  •  Yes. They do know what we watch. (6+ / 0-)

Ratings and all.  Nielson.  They know.

Corporations are driven by the bottom line, not by concerns for health, safety or the environment. This is why we need government regulations.

I know that what Nielson families watch changes ratings, but what about what people watch on cable? Is that recorded?

$ to DFA, none to DSCC/DCCC/DNC

I would like to see evidence of this.  I'm not saying it couldn't be true, but it does sound a bit conspiracy-theoryish.

          •  proof of which "this"? yes, Nielsen wants cable (2+ / 0-)

            data.

Nielsen families record (write down in the diary booklet) EVERYTHING they watch, live and tivo'd.

for the DVR/TIVO stuff, you put in the record booklet WHEN you "taped" it and when you watched it (if within 7 days, I think). and it totally DOES include cable stuff.

we did this about 2 years ago. We must have put quite a kink in their data -- we never watch ANYthing live, we tape-on-pre-set, and watch hours or days later, depending. for example, will often watch PART of Rachel-Lawrence block on the day, and finish it for morning-wake-ups the next day.

we like R&L pretty good, but for actual news, lots of that comes in HERE 24-48 hours before it shows up ANYWHERE on teh teevee machine. we seldom watch cached stuff during the daylight hours, as there's too much to do at that time of day.

"real" work : a job where you wash your hands BEFORE you use the bathroom...

We did Nielsen rating for about a year, and each person in the family wore a monitor which tracked everything we watched.  So I know how the voluntary monitoring works.  But I thought the post referred to the cable companies monitoring viewers without their knowledge or consent.  That would be a whole different issue.
