  •  To nitpick (5+ / 0-)

Strictly speaking as the replica vessel was not a ship of the line (in the Royal Navy), the HMS bit is erroneous. Indeed the original Bounty would have been know as HMAV (His Majesty's Armed Vessel) Bounty or simply the Bounty. The ship was originally designed to carry coal and started as the Bethia before being purchased by the Navy.

A second "replica" (wood covered steel hulled vessel so not historically exact) built in New Zealand uses the HMAV title.

    •  Yes...but it has always gone by the name HMS. (0+ / 0-)

Perhaps that is the name she's registered under. All I know is that is what the company who owns it calls her.

The details of ship designations are often lost by people unfamiliar with history - a lot of history is in fact, witness that some Hollywood films have shown "the British" flying the current Union Flag during the War of Independence. (The red diagonal St Patrick's cross was added in 1801)

The "SS Titanic" was in fact the "RMS Titanic" indicating that she was contracted to carry Royal Mail across the Atlantic.

Movies and even marketing lead to some surprizing misconceptions. Father Christmas was traditionally robed in green - an allusion to the "Green Man" until Coca-Cola got its hands on the image. The correct national color of Ireland is (wait for it) blue.
