  •  and that wordsmithing is killing people (0+ / 0-)

    right now.
We have seen here on dkos the denial we all have built in, and to help that along weathertech's babble about whether it's a tropical storm or a hurricane feeds right into the denial m,echanism.
Us uneducated people who listen to that try to make an understanding of it, and unfortunately some have chosen wrong, that 'this is a tropical storm so it's like Irene only now not a hurricane' etc...this is going to be measured as a major communications failure at many levels.
I'm sure weather techs can justify their technical parsing, the problem is that so many people are actually listening to them.

I hope I am overstating the case, but I saw that parsing in many news sources online, linked by many here as well.

If they wanted to get cute with their naming they should have called it an 'enhanced hurricane' or something way more dangerous than a tropical storm. Mixed messages at best  .

    That was a deadly mistake.

    •  no, what they did was absolutely correct (13+ / 0-)

as i've watched live streams up and down the coast, media is doing an excellent job explaining why this is dangerous and precisely what this is. People go to their local media and quite frankly, this year I've been impressed with how stations in Philadelphia and New York have covered this event.

I've written why they did this in diary after diary. Storms are storms and should be treated that way. It wasn't "cute" at all. Sandy underwent extratropical transition--as forecasted 6 days ago---between 3pm and 7pm today. The weather service explained very well why it would not  be any less dangerous. It would still retain its name.

Coastal residents also know that nor'easters can be as bad if not worse than hurricanes. It's just been some time since we've had a stupendously nasty one.

I hope anyone who sues the Weather Service for "getting cute" gets laughed out of court when there were warnings from the Weather Service on this storm at every single forecast office from North Carolina to Maine since Wednesday.

that even though it was a Cat 1 the storm surge was likely to be closer to that of a Cat 3. I thought they did a good job throughout in explaining how dangerous the storm was regardless of whether it was technically a hurricane or a post-tropical storm or whatever. And you're right, if you live in or near a coastal area of the mid-Atlantic you know by now that a nor'easter can be devastating in terms of flooding and other damage.

    •  I kept reading it was very serious, are people in (3+ / 0-)

New York so dumb they don't realize multiple repetitions and calls for evacuation mean it's serious?

The mistake was the morons who kept thinking Sandy was no more dangerous than Irene. I read a post about the naming. The weather service, or whomever, have jargon they use so they understand what it means.

They aren't being 'cute' with their naming, people like you are just happy being ignorant and too lazy to make an effort to understand.

I am very worried about the homeless, if no one cared about them before I'm sure they are much worse off now.

Oh, and "wordsmithing" kills no one. It's the wind, water and flying debris.
