My best advice is to not try to persuade him. People tend to shut down when they know they're being persuaded. If the topic comes up, approach it as a question. You're genuinely curious (which I'm sure is the truth). If he outlines his thinking, you can gently guide him to the truth.

    I'll think on this more...

The only thing harder than speaking truth to power is speaking truth to stupid.

    •  Thanks that was what I was thinking. (8+ / 0-)

Only reason at all being because I was surprised when he shut my door and just point blank asked me basically "who should I vote for". I think he would have listened to me as I am probably nicest and help him the most, treat like equal (other ppl just call him to fix stuff).

But Where I work is a bit outside of Cleveland, probably a County that always leans Red. Id guess McCain carried. As in his surroundings are and have been Red, I am sure he probably asked others.

I think you're right wait a few days and just see if he decided, if he says Obama have some reasons why good and move along, if not don't lecture but see why.

I think at least it's important to realize that I could never in a million years imagine this kinda backwoods type guy well considering Obama, let alone worry about the middle class.

I'd add (I imagine why he's middle class) he's about 40, though not educated, I believe his mother died and he inherited her house, etc. so probably enough to make a difference but not a trust fund. Don't know enough about what Obama's done tax-wise or Romney would do otherwise would point out and could ask if he figured out or got advice on it, and casually mention their plans.

Kinda how this guy I am helping wants to Short Sale his home. He is a good guy. But I was surprised when he was describing and said "My house is under water [explaining how ie not literally but value v. Mortgage] and how he wanted to Short sale or something . . .  adding it's all "Obama's Fault"" I bit my tongue.

But then I learned everything about the process and when discussed ironically he'd ask questions like forgiving the debt (as bank accepting less for what you owe, debt forgiveness is theoretically income ie you owe bank 100 k, the house is worth 70k, you're under water, so you short sale for 65k, you have 35k in income) BUT because of questions like that I would get to throw in that explanation then "But, because of ___ that Obama passed even if they don't agree to ___ you won't have as income".

Sorry for the long antecdote, just made me think of him as well. Wonder if what I said made him rethink as really wasn't my intent, more I was annoyed that he'd be Badmouthing the president whose very policies he is going to save a good deal of money from. (Let alone his house price being this President's fault).

      •  Sounds like you've gone as far (11+ / 0-)

as you can politely go, with the janitor guy.  The short-seller, well, I think you can be fairly blunt with him.  Plus didn't the housing market crash BEFORE Obama was even elected?  Makes me crazy how these people think he's an Evil Time Lord.

      •  you know how it is here lately (0+ / 0-)

with the ads bombarding people at every turn. A hard sell is definitely not the way to go.

The closest I might go is an oblique "boy, it's too bad the Senate Republicans are dragging their feet on the President's plan to let people renegotiate their mortgages if they owe more than their house is worth." But don't push.
