I couldn't tell you where the FFBs get some of it, but a lot of it comes from living in an insulated subculture where they deliberately minimize their exposure to the Outside World for fear of corruption.

(Not that all FFBs do this -- I certainly don't -- but it's a habit a lot of us have.  And one I think we could stand to lose.)

and I understand that there are pockets of weird that are not the norm - but man, I sure seem to find a lot of pockets of weird personally. :P

I agree that a lot of it comes from the intentional insulation from the rest of the world - but there is also the impact of charismatic BTs coming in and bringing their garbage with them.

There is a popular English speaking BT rabbi in Israel I know of that regularly spouts American right wing talking points in his shiurim.  He's brought anti abortion fervour to chassidus and regularly tells people to marry their first cousins, heartily approves (to a point I find deeply repulsive) of uncle/niece pairings and that by keeping Taharah HaMishpocha properly you won't get kids with Tay Sachs or worse.  Testing?  We don't need testing, just be frummer!  Of course, if you do have a sick kid, Hashem is just testing you and you need to Jew up and keep having more.  BREED!!!  That secular doctor that told you your baby is dead/dying/killing you lied because s/he's NOT RELIGIOUS!!!

Seriously, they get nearly that bad.

BTs and FFBs flock to this guy because he's got a good voice and is an entertaining speaker with a lot of energy - and he's pushing that whole evangelical frum sickness.  He makes it sound so easy and black and white and hey - YOU are the star of your own frummie show!  HaShem loves you best when you're more frum than your neighbours...

I think it's great to get frum.  I think it's great to be frum.  I highly recommend it to Jews who haven't tried it. If I have kids, they are going to be FFB and have Torah education (as well as secular) because that is the best gift I can give them as a parent in that respect - not having it myself and playing catch up - I know what I missed.

But people like that and the ones that follow them scare the shit out of me.  How do we do something about it?

And we sail and we sail and we never see land, just the rum in the bottle and a pipe in my hand...
