  •  Panels are now being made (12+ / 0-)

    that are integral to a roof, that look like shingles. The big, '70s ones that stick up would blow away, but the newer ones should be fine.

    It's criminal that we haven't made more than token efforts in the last 30 years to increase solar usage in this country. The entire south and west could be lighted and heated with solar; we should be building solar into roofs and thus reducing by a good bit our reliance on imported oil.

      And those technologies will be great.  I am huge fan of solar, and I agree with everything you say.  But, for now, the panels are still the main form of distributed solar, and they are still very likely to be taken out by high winds.

        be encouraging, through the kinds of subsidies and various breaks given to such as oil companies, development and purchase of these things.

        My original comment was that these could be a major factor, not that they are such at the moment.
